knockout stage
A knockout stage (or elimination stage) is the part of a tournament where a team or player is eliminated after losing a match.
For example, after the group stage in many competitions, the knockout stage begins:
- Round of 16
- Quarter-finals
- Semi-finals
- Final
If a team loses in any of these rounds, it is knocked out of the tournament. The winner advances to the next round until a champion is determined.
Examples include the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
